Why having maternity photos doesn’t need to be awkward

I think when it comes to maternity photos, there is often a misconception that they can be a bit cheesy, very posed and awkward. With my first pregnancy, I definitely felt this way, which resulted me in having no nice photos! Rather just some grainy selfies in the bathroom mirror.

Pregnancy is a funny time. While you’re in it, it can feel like time drags (especially those last few weeks!). But then once it’s over you realise what a brief, and incredibly extraordinary moment in your life it was.

Maternity photos can be so special, as they preserve this time for years to come. I am still blown away by how incredible mothers are, how our bodies change and adapt to grow this little person. How special to have an image of your incredible pregnant self, not just for you to look back on, but for your children as well.

And it’s not just about the pregnant bump. When captured by the right photographer, maternity photos can also capture that feeling – of anticipation and excitement. And for second pregnancies, they can show that bond with your first child. A mixed feeling of loss and guilt, as well as excitement for the growth of your family. And for third (and fourth!) pregnancies, it’s all about the beauty of your expanding family - this brief moment before everything changes once again.
